Communicating Ideas 03 & 04

Considering my partners project and the narrative they want it to have.

These two classes were very much connected and so I decided to write one post about them, First I explored the communication matrix in more depth from the perspective of my personal project and tried to gain a better understanding who I could potentially reach out to in the future. Then I took some time to go further into Jorges project. I wanted to create a better understanding of what he wants to portray through his project and so the exercises that were done last week for myself I now did for him keeping in mind how he has talked about his project. Finally Jorge and I caught up in more depth about each others projects and did a second interview about what we see in the future. 

My Communication Matrix

Personally one of the best takeaways from the third class from communicating ideas. This matrix has truly helped me form a plan of how I could reach out to others easier and what I hope to gain from these interactions. It doesn't only consist of the ways to connect but also thinking of potential barriers which was important to realize moving forward.

Understanding Jorges Project Personality

While Jorge and I have not had many formal discussions about his project, throughout term 2 we have talked a lot about our ideas, views and values of design and also taking into account our thesis project. I not only see his way of design as pushing us forward but also really actively trying to use design methodologies to push design in such a way that we as designers are no longer outside of the problem but are actively trying to collaborate with people. His research is currently focussed on how cities can engage with citizens by using immersive technologies to create a collaborative design process. This for me really set a tone of being welcoming but informative towards others. His upbringing in Mexico has made him curious to the ways transportation and infrastructure can be bettered and his main driver in this is that citizen participation is key. For me he has this nice mix of values like knowledge and curiosity but also recognition to the problems that exist and giving community and contribution this main role. 

Summarizing Jorges Project

Below is a created presentation to better show what Jorge's project is about and also the values, personality and themes that are crucial to his project according to my perception of his project. I feel the style of presentation also fits his vision well as he is well articulated and needs to share information in a clear way, yet also be engaging to be able to reach citizens that might not be open at first to engaging with his project. 

Reflecting on Communicating Design 03 & 04

With these past classes I really enjoyed the way the classes were structured in such a way that I was better able to understand not only my project but also how I needed to portray my own project to others. From talking to Jorge and trying to share my own values to truly listening to what he had to say and trying to better understand what his values were.

The tandem exercise has been challenging in a way that is refreshing to me. I feel that it is a key skill to be able to articulate what you want others to take away from your project. While at the beginning of this term I wasn't sure about the exercise as the time goes on it is feeling more and more useful. 

Also, by talking more in depth about not only your own project but someone like Jorge, who is working on a different area, it gives me fresh ideas to move forward. I did feel like the brand identity and voice is something that might change as time goes on as he is still in the beginning phases of formulating his research topic and what he wants it to be.

This though is something I also relate to, while I began this term with a slightly clearer direction of my project, how I want it to be portrayed to others is still something I am discovering. It makes a fun challenge to not only consider how i want it to be showed but also what tools I can implement to make this happen in the long run.

All in all these past classes with communicating ideas have been useful in the way of bringing more depth to the portrayal of my own project, and also understanding on a deeper level what Jorge, my tandem project, wants to achieve with his own project.
